I was an Australian in America at the height of the Conchords hype. Even though they were from New Zealand, everything I did ended up being associated with them. I ended up hating them for ages because of it.
But then thanks to some really clever comedic song writing, and lots of in jokes about this song, I got back into them:
But, it seems I'm one of the only ones around to not get caught up in the hysteria of this band. Because they've announced a tour... to the Entertainment Centre. A much bigger venue than I ever imagined!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, what a classic rap (that is also part of their worst movie):
But even if we ignore this movie, and Jersey Girl, Kevin Smith is one of the directors of our generation. I still quote Mallrats on an almost daily basis, over 10 years since I first saw it as an impressionable 14 year old. Now I know this is a music blog (mainly), but a tour is coming to Brisbane, not music related, that I just have to share.
Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, the re-occuring comedy side-characters of all of the Kevin Smith universe) are doing a comedy tour through Australia. I hope it's not just Jay standing there with Silent Bob saying one sentence at the very end (like in his movies). But by all reviews I've seen, it's supposed to be quite funny.
I am a man. A man with a beard. Since I was about 17, my face has always been adorned with some sort of hair, except for those unfortunate times when I accidentally trimmed too close and looked 14 for the few days it took me to man back up.
I'm not the only person that enjoys a good Beard. The band known as The Beards have formed their entire musical premise around beards. Well, beards, comedy and folk music. It's bloody hilarious. Click the link above to get some free MP3s from them. I'd especially recommend "If Your Dad Doesn't Have A Beard You've Got Two Mums".
They're playing a show at the Zoo on August 12th. You should see them. 18+
Donald Glover is a renaissance man. Sitcom writer. Comedy actor. And rapper.
Most of you will only know his rapping from this:
(And if you don't know who he is, he's the black guy)
But he's oh so much more. He's been rapping since "Lance (Armstrong) had chemo". During that time he's gone by two names mcDJ, for his remixes, and Childish Gambino, for his rapping. The beauty of his rapping is that he adapts his wit and comedic timing from his acting and screenwriting perfectly to the hip-hop medium.
The best part is, everything he does, he puts out for free on one of his plethora of websites. He has a new EP out in the last few weeks, and I'm not going to lie when I say it's one of the better hip-hop releases I've heard in a while. Flame away at my opionion, but I don't care, as I may have a little man crush on him.
Get it for free on his blog. The rest of his releases are hidden there somewhere too. And even if you don't like the TV show Community (I doubt someone exists) and you don't like hip-hop (more likely) at least check out the track Freaks and Geeks. It's great.
Weird Al will be bringing his parodies, his accordian and his penchant for polka to our area for two shows: Monday 14th March – Jupiter’s Showroom, Gold Coast Tuesday 15th March – QPAC
For a long time I was obsessed with the improv TV show Who's Line is it? In the USA version, the best comedian by far was Wayne Brady. He really shone in coming up with songs on the spot, in any style you could imagine. And damn was he good at it. He's also a very funny man, as shown in this Dave Chappelle video:
I love the behind the scenes commentary on that. Apparently it was almost impossible for Wayne Brady to be mean, or even to say the word "bitch." It took him like 20 takes.
On November 30 you'll be able to catch him at QPac doing a completely improv show. Expect music, impressions and just to be in pain from laughing too hard.
