Local noise

One of Brisbane's noise-rock bands, Stature::Statue are deciding to call it a day. But they're going to go out in style, with a giant noise-rock show at the Zoo, surrounded by other local bands that also enjoy making noise.

On April 28, for only $10, you can say goodbye. Playing with Stature::Statue are Velociraptor. I've yet to see this band, but everyone says I'd dig them, not just because they are named after my favourite/most feared dinosaur. Apparently, the band ranges from 3 to 12 members, depending on how they feel and the make some excellent noise.

Free Music Friday 11!

I thought I'd give you all some free music before I officially start these holiday shenanigans. And today's free music comes from a band that randomly added me on Twitter. Now normally when someone adds me on Twitter I just presume it's spam and ignore it completely. But this profile had a little spark to their description which initially attracted my attention.

First off, they are from Madison Wisconsin, one of my favourite party locations in the world. Second, they play noise rock. And if you follow this blog at all, you'll know that I have a weakness for the world of noise rock.

They are, the United Sons of Toil.

They've got a new album ready to come out soon, but you can currently get their 2008 album Until Lions Have Their Historians, Tales of the Hunt Shall Always Glorify the Hunter. A mouthful, huh? I recently did the one sentence review treatment of it:

As I mentioned, the best way to describe their sound is of a band that grew up on 90's emo/math-rock (the likes of Texas is the Reason and Sunny Day Real Estate) but also liked their noise and hardcore (I detect a definite Helmet sound floating in their music). They mixed it all up, let it marinated for a decade or so, and then created this band.

Their album of the ridiculously long name is available on their Bandcamp, for the low cost of "name-your-price". Check it out, and if you like it like I do, throw a few dollars and wait for their next album out in the next few months.

Free Music Friday 8!

I've been preaching it for a while now, silently hidden amongst my posts. I think 2011 will be the year that garage rock resurfaces into the mainstream. Which I guess ruins the whole garage rock ethos/philosophy then. Maybe it's a cycle? Whoa, I don't know, 6 am is way too early to be going into a philosophical train of thought about garage rock needing to go mainstream to refind it's garage roots.

I digress.

Garage rock is the bees knees. And Ladder Devils are a band from Philadelphia, a city known for it's dog fighting and shitty bars, that play garage rock.

Their style of garage-rock is definitely a lot noisier and you can detect a bit of hardcore influence in their music as well. A few parts of songs even have a Future of the Left vibe. All of those things just make my ears happy.

They have a five song EP entitled Forget English which is absolutely free. Unlike some of the other free links I post up, there's no way to donate to get the music. Which I totally would, because I really, really like this EP.

New Years Noise

My favourite New Zealand band, hands down, is Die! Die! Die! Not only do they have a great name, they play some great noisy garage rock. Which is a particular favourite genre of mine right now.

Although they've been through town a few times in 2010, they thought they'd squeeze one more show in just before midnight on New Years Eve. They'll be playing Woodlands on New Years Eve, before the venue transforms into the official after party for the No Years show at the Powerhouse.
