Rod Fucking Stewart

Like I need to fucking introduce Rod fucking Stewart. If you don't know who he is, ask your mum.

For those of you playing for extra points at home, he even wrote the song that was the theme for the British tv show the Office.

This man has been getting girls naked only using his voice for longer than you've been around. I swear it, you get him in a room and bam, underwear goes flying, as if by magic.

So come February 22nd 2012, lock up your daughters, mothers and sisters and keep them away from the Entertainment Centre

Pink Floyd's The Wall

Like a lot of people, I had a lot of fun times in first year university that were generally backed by Pink Floyd. Most days my roomate and I played Mario Tennis with the soundtrack replaced by Pink Floyd. However, one of the most memorable experiences came in the middle of a multi-day bender when somehow we started watching Pink Floyd's movie, the Wall, at about 3 am.

I'll tell you the story another day, probably not on the internet, but needless to say, it was a mindfuck. Even years on, re-watching it with a clear head and without everything else that was happening, it's... well... interesting. Confusing too. And it features Bob Geldoff not being a bleeding heart, which I didn't think was possible.

Despite my opinions of the movie, the Soundtrack is epic. The main song (Another Brick in the Wall) is basically a pop-song now that still gets played daily on commercial radio worldwide, and even gets remixed and sampled in dance music.

Anyone of my generation will never get the chance to see Pink Floyd perform it. What we can get though, and as early as next year, is Pink Floyd's bass player, co-vocalist and songwriter Roger Waters perfoming the album in more than a concert, it's a multi-media overwhelming of the senses. It features:
3D animations, explosions, a Stuka bomber that dives into the stage and a 230 feet long and 35 feet high wall, which is build brick by giant brick by stage hands during the spectacular, two-hour plus show.
Whoa. Just whoa.
February 1st at the Entertainment Centre. I imagine this will sell out quickly (and probably be a little expensive).

Art

Music is art, right? And movies are also art, correct? Which explains the Gallery of Modern Art's (GoMA) new exhibition: Let There Be Rock.

Between April and June GoMA will be screening music related movies and documentaries. And on some Friday nights, they'll have a band accompanying them, playing music related to what's being screened.

And if you check out the list, there's some great music movies to be watched for really low prices. Control and Spinal Tap are both great movies, and I've always wanted to see Dig! So I guess this means its time for me to embrace art?

Dead Kennedys tour

A few weeks ago I bought my first Dead Kennedy's vinyl. It was hard to find, but gosh darn it, it's a classic for any collection.

And now we get a tour!

However, whatever hopes you had of screaming out Too Drunk to Fuck at the top of your lungs at a crazy punk show like this, you should shelve them. As the fearless lead singer, Jello Biafra (better know for his voice overs on many Offspring albums) hasn't been part of the band for ages.

Now, that shouldn't stop you from going out on April 7 to the HiFi and rocking out with all the giant mohwawks, but to me... it may just not be the same. Kind of like that Misfits tour without Danzing.

April 7. HiFi.

Doobie Brothers

I love this time of year. Just when I'm starting to think "crap, what do I get my Dad for Christmas?" an awesome band of days gone by announces a tour. And it's always something my Dad and I like. In previous years it has been Neil Young, Mark Knopfler and America. This year, it's something very close to my heart: the Doobie Brothers.

About the time I really started paying attention to music I had an American History teacher that leant me a Doobie Brothers CD. I listened to it at home for a bit before my dad leant me some Doobie Brothers casettes for my car. It's as roots American-rock as you can get. They had so many hits: China Grove, Black Water, Listen to the Music, What A Fool Believes (when Michael McDonald was the singer), Taking it to the Streets, Jesus is Just Alright... Ok, many of you Australian's won't know those songs, but you'd still hear a few on Triple M every now and then.

I wanted to embed a video, but the 'tube wouldn't let me. So just click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqZ95a249p0. Come March 24th I plan on being one of this middle-aged people you see dancing in that video. But younger of course.

The Doobie Brothers. March 24th. Convention Centre. Featuring half of the very original lineup (not that it means much, they've changed pretty constantly for the last 30 odd years) but the original lead singer. Not Michael McDonald. So probably no What A Fool Believes.
